FAQs

What is a doula?

A Birth Doula offers you support during your pregnancy and throughout your labor and birth experience.  Your healthcare provider, your family, they are all there to care for you in their own capacity, but may not be continuously available and have other roles to fill.  A Doula’s focus is on continuous support throughout labor. Doulas work closely with partners to give the birthing person the optimal support team she deserves. A Doula is there for you, with you on this journey to motherhood by offering you emotional and physical support. Doula’s do not offer medical care or make medical decisions.

How does a doula support me in home and birth center locations?

At home or at a birth center birth, your support may be a much more physical and mobile process since the birth will be less interventions occurring. A home or birth center birth will allow the birthing person to have more freedom to choose how to navigate their birth journey.

I have a midwife, do i need a doula?

A midwife’s role is to manage the medical care of you and your baby throughout your pregnancy, labor, birth, and some of the early postpartum stage. Most midwives also do an incredible job of listening to you and meeting your needs. While there is some overlap between a midwife and a doula, they each fill different roles. As mentioned above, midwives provide medical care to you and your baby. A doula provides nonmedical care to you and your partner.

I have a partner why do I need a doula?

Doulas provide continuous support during your labor and birth that may include massage, acupressure, relaxation techniques, emotional support and encouragement, explanations, positioning suggestions, partner support and help with breastfeeding establishment. Doulas don’t replace your partner but can offer additional support.

How does a doula support Me in medicated, hospital, or surgical births?

For women who have decided to have a medicated birth, the doula will provide emotional, informational, and physical support through labor and the administration of medications. Doulas work alongside medicated mothers to help them deal with potential side effects.

How is doula support different if i am an experienced parent?

You may have some knowledge of the process from the previous time however each experience can be a little different. Having someone to chat with about the different experiences is something our clients really appreciate. They say that having a doula with every birth is just as valuable as the first time. It is our job to support you as you welcome your newest family member.  We are there to help you have the loving, gentle birth experience you deserve.
